   Our Vision

Our vision is to provide a full multi-language administrator CMS solution. We often get asked "Is Joomla! International Edition better than Joomla!?", well there isn't really an answer for everybody. Joomla! international provides broad language capabilities to those who work collaboratively on Joomla! projects in different languages. It is also well suited for localized Joomla! releases because the language packs are much easier to maintain than an entire release of Joomla!

Background

Joomla! International Edition (JIE) was made possible by the support of USAID funded EPRC Project and the Information and Communication Technology Authority of Mongolia. JIE was born on the windy steppes of Mongolia, as a small project to help improve the website capabilities of local government agencies here. It was shown that it was necessary for us and our partners to create a Mongolian version of Joomla! for use in these agencies. During the planning stages of this project, we realized the effort needed to create a fully localized Mongolian Joomla! was somewhere on par with just creating a fully international version of Joomla!. We couldn't find any other projects that provided fully pluggable language packs for the administrator interface, so we decided to create a new version of Joomla! that would include this functionality and much more.

Through the process of creating JIE, we faced many obstacles, mainly due to the UTF-8 conversion, however much of this was overcome with the help of the Joomla! community and our local team. USAID realized that this project had more potential than just here in Mongolia, and they gave us their full support to continue development of a full featured package. We hope that JIE will help the international community at large by provided a much better language solution for their CMS than previous Joomla! releases.
